Get Lost in a Movie This Weekend

I realized last week that I haven’t been to the movies in awhile, so this week I remedied that dilemma by taking in two movies.  When it comes to doing activities solo I think the movies is a really good one.  I know some people feel awkward going into a restaurant and eating dinner by themselves, but going to a darkened theater to get lost in a movie is the perfect activity to do alone.  You can’t talk during the movie…or at least you shouldn’t…and if it’s not a really deep movie that begs for discussion afterwards, then it’s a great get-away!

The two movies were Burnt with Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller and the second was The Intern with Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway.  I’ll start by saying I loved both.

Burnt is the story of a highly acclaimed chef who basically peaked too early as a young chef and destroyed his career with drugs, etc… and who then decides he wants to redeem himself by opening a new restaurant in London and earn three Michelin stars.  Okay, it’s not going to win any awards, but I loved the story, it involves beautiful food presentation and how can you not love Bradley Cooper??  He’s just adorable and I loved watching him for a couple of hours.  So, go spend an afternoon getting lost in his culinary world.

I really loved The Intern and it’s probably because of the numerous messages that are hit upon throughout the movie.  First of all it’s a Nancy Meyer movie and frankly they’re all just great, lovely stories.  She’s been the writer and/or producer of Father of the Bride, The Holiday, Something’s Gotta Give, and It’s Complicated….to name a few!  Her attention to detail with the sets and the settings are unparalleled.  They’re usually cozy, charming and perfectly decorated.  You know how a Danielle Steele novel is predictable, in a good way…that’s kind of like a Nancy Meyer movie…only better!  You know it’s going to be a good, easy movie to watch with some nice messages throughout.  I’m never sorry I spent the time in the movie theater to see one of her movies and they’re usually ones that I can watch more than once.  How many times have you seen The Holiday??  I’ve seen most of her movies numerous times.  Okay, enough about Nancy.  The Intern is about a new program at a start-up company using senior interns (senior citizens that is) as interns.  Anne Hathaway plays the founder of the start-up that is becoming really big, really fast and struggles with how to handle the growth.  She’s not crazy about the whole senior intern idea, but ends up loving him and he helps her..yada, yada, yada.  The messages I came away with were…#1 the millennials need embrace the art of the conversation and one on one contact..it’s getting lost to texting and emailing (that’ll be an upcoming post of mine.) #2 the rise of women/moms in the workplace and the cultural dance that society plays, including embracing the stay-at-home dad.  #3 we should start carrying handkerchiefs. & #4 when you retire or when you are left alone in the autumn of your life you keep busy and fill your time because you don’t want to just sit around and let life pass you by.  I really love Robert De Niro in this film…endearing and lovely.  Anne Hathaway can be a bit annoying to me as an actor, but she’s pretty good in this and plays the role well.  …and lastly, it’s set in NYC…what’s not to like!
