Weekend in the Woods

IMAG5040

IMAG5041_1I think I’ve mentioned how awesome my neighborhood is and what a great place it was/is to raise kids.  As neighbors we’ve gone on vacations together and generally just enjoyed each other’s company.  For the most part, we all had kids in common and that unifying thread has stuck with us even as our children have grown, gotten married and some of us have become grandparents.  There’s now a whole new crop of younger families that have moved in and the streets are alive with the sound of kids playing, bikes riding and parents calling them.  I love the rejuvenation it’s brought to the neighborhood.

So, I say all of that because we, as a neighborhood, have been invited for the past 5 years to the Farley home in Arizona for “The Weekend in the Woods.”  The Farley’s lived and raised their kids in the neighborhood, moved to Arizona and now their daughter and her family are in their home here.  How cool is that!  I’ve only been able to go to the first weekend back in 2011 because my life has been a little wacky since, but now that things had started to settle down a bit I looked forward to the 5th annual event.

I’m somewhat of a wuss when it comes to tent camping, so I’m lucky enough to get a beautiful room in the main house.  Almost everyone else camps out under the stars in tents.  We arrived on a Thursday afternoon, just in time to relax and get settled before prepping the dinner.  It’s all very organized with everyone signing up for different chores throughout the weekend….prep, cooking and clean up for each meal, to name a few.  I made the mistake of signing up for cooking a few nights this time, not realizing that it meant cooking over the open fire pit, where I have no experience…sorry Morgan & Jim!  I think I made up for it by signing up for extra prep chores??

Beautiful morning in the meadow

There are activities planned for every day and it’s up to you whether you want to partake…or just sit somewhere and read a book.  There’s a few nature hikes, treasure hunting and tracking for the kids and a trip to Bearizona Wildlife Park.  I had a couple of great afternoons just reading and napping, but I really enjoyed the wildlife park visit. Here’s a glimpse…

One of the highlights of the weekend is the team games/activity day.  Our hosts split us up into teams and we compete against each other with prizes at the end of the day.  We did weed pulling, archery and log-splitting and it’s always so much fun.  Although there’s a picture here of me practicing archery, I was not in the competition (which was best for my team.)  My form looks bad-ass but I never hit a bullseye…not sure if I even hit the bale of hay? Here are a few pics….

On our last night we made waffle cone smores…filling waffle cones with all kinds of goodies, wrapping them in tin foil and putting them in the fire to get warm…with toppings and whipped cream to top them off.  Sooo yummy!!IMAG5148

Alameda Antique Faire

Thanks to my friend, Darla, I’ve had the Alameda Flea Market (technically it’s the Alameda Points Antique Faire) on my “must go” list for a few months and my sister’s birthday weekend was the perfect opportunity to take a trip up to SF. I probably go to San Francisco at least once a year and my friend since first grade, Mary Kay, lives in Alameda.  How I haven’t heard of it until recently is beyond me.

It takes place the first Sunday of every month and it is HUGE!  My sister, daughter, future son-in-law and MK were up and out early to beat the crowds & the heat.  It was a cool, overcast, foggy morning…..perfect weather for treasure hunting.  We must have walked miles & miles, inspired by some of the creative upcycling done on some old discards, while reminiscing about vintage objects long forgotten.

Pictures tell the story best….

I sent this pic to my daughter-in-law..they also have a tandem. I like the addition of the baby seat on the back (hint, hint!!)

We went back to the hotel to relax before my sister’s birthday dinner at a new-ish place called Presidio Social Club.  The atmosphere was fun and lively with thirteen of my niece’s friends.   I must have been a little tired after our busy day because I didn’t take any foodie pics…but I know my steak and duck fat fries were good, as was the mac & cheese!

San Francisco…a few new finds

IMAG4944_1San Francisco

I took another trip up the coast to San Francisco a few weekends ago with my older sister to celebrate her birthday weekend and see her daughter…my niece.  Once again, the drive up Highway 101 didn’t disappoint, with ocean views and beautiful weather.

We made an overnight stop in quaint Los Osos to visit her sister-in-law & her husband.  We took a little tour of nearby Cayucos to see a huge house that her brother-in-law has been building for quite awhile and to just check out the area.  They introduced me to Brown Butter Cookie Company, which I will now add to my “must go” stops on any coastal trip.   I wish you could taste these butter cookies with sea salt on top…melt in your mouth amazing!  They’re not cheap, but worth the splurge if you’re near Cayucos.  We finished the evening with a wonderful dinner on their outdoor patio overlooking the nearby preserve.  Who doesn’t love dining al fresco in the summer!

Dinner sunset view…not too shabby!

We got up early the next day to continue our drive up to San Francisco for a lunch reservation at The Slanted DoorWe were both looking forward to their mouth-watering yellowtail appetizer with crispy shallots and thai basil….as well as the shaking beef, and spring rolls with peanut sauce.  We hit a bit of traffic getting into SF but made it to restaurant just in time before the scheduled 2:15 lunch closing…phew, that was a close one!  As my sister went to meet her daughter at her workplace after our lunch, I headed to Britex fabrics and met up with my daughter and future son-in-law who had decided to make the trek up too..what an added bonus!  If you like sewing or fabrics in general and you’ve never been to Britex while in SF please add it to your list.  It’s four floors of every type of fabric you can think of and right off Union Square.  We were a bit overwhelmed looking for fabric to recover my newly acquired, but old, dining room chairs, but we persevered.  After successfully navigating and purchasing fabric we made a stop at the new Nespresso Boutique store on Grant Ave.  It’s an entire two stories of Nespresso….a store downstairs and a bar at street level where you can enjoy everything Nespresso (decadent shakes included), plus desserts…and they serve wine too.

IMAG5024

Palace Hotel newly renovated atrium…my dad told me the story of how the horse-drawn carriages used to drop guests off here back in the day…that’s how old it is!

We stopped back at our hotel, The Palace, to meet up with my sister and niece…and then headed down the street for dinner at Anchor & Hope. The atmosphere was great, but we were all a bit underwhelmed by the food.  My niece swears that it’s an amazing lunch spot that’s always packed, so I’ll reserve judgment until I return for lunch!  It was a fun dinner with all the kids…I guess they’re really adults now!

IMAG4943

The following morning I took a nice walk to the ferry building marketplace to walk off last night’s dinner and prepare for another day of eating and drinking ahead.  Saturday’s at the ferry building includes an added bonus of the farmer’s market and always the beautiful view of the bay.  Napa wine tasting was on the agenda today!  Our driver picked us up at 9, we headed over to the East Bay to pick up my friend, MK, who’s been one of my best friends since 1st grade.  …and off we went!

IMAG4953

Our first stop for wine tasting was at Caymus Vineyards.  The grounds are beautiful with small vignettes of seating under gazebos and pergolas.  Instead of the usual wine tasting at a walk up bar, we sat under some beautiful trees at a table and the various wines were brought to us to critique.  Bottles were purchased by the four of us and we hopped back into the car to be whisked away to lunch at Farmstead at Longmeadow Ranch, which I’d recommend.  MK and I decided to split a meal and started with an amazing salad of Caramelized beets with sky hill goat cheese crema, greens and chimichurri…the picture says it all….

IMAG4964

IMAG4955 IMAG4959

We made two more stops after lunch, before our inevitable food coma!  The first was to Rombauer, on the Silverado Trail, with it’s beautiful terraced gardens overlooking St. Helena and exceptional chardonnay (this was the first winery I ever went to back in the 90’s with my “wasband”…a gentler way of saying ex-husband…when it was just a dirt road up the windy hillside) and our second stop was ZD winery, a place recommended by my sister’s friend for their chardonnay.  We couldn’t taste their popular 2013 chard, but we purchased it anyway hoping it won’t disappoint (haven’t cracked it open yet, so no review as of yet!)  The Cabernet was good & I’d recommend it!

IMAG4967

IMAG4966 IMAG4974 IMAG4971I think we all slept on  the ride back to city in preparation for our dinner out with some of my kid’s friends at E&O Kitchen on Sutter.  It’s one of my “go-to” places in SF, and because there were 14 of us we were given a cozy back room where we enjoyed each other’s company and the always consistently good food.  Too much to recommend, just take my word for it that it’s good for a group.  Caitlin, one of the millennials, recommended we all go to a place around the corner for a cocktail and led us to a cool little spot…through lobby of the Mystic Hotel and up a staircase….Burritt Room and Tavern. It had such a fun vibe, with live jazz music….definitely a place I’m looking forward to taking everyone on my next trip up to SF.

IMAG4982 IMAG4984

Walking back to hotel, I took a couple of pics of the adorable Claude Lane alley off of Sutter and Kearny, where there are some french restaurants.

IMAG4988 IMAG4987

I walk by it every time I’m in the city and want to go, but there’s never enough time to do everything…..another one for the next trip!  Sunday was all about the Alameda Flea Market, which will be it’s own post!

If you haven’t been to San Francisco, get there!  It’s only six hours away by car (or much quicker by air), but a world away from Southern California.  I didn’t even delve into the great shopping, theater and nightlife available!

Motivational Monday….The Journey

Here are a few that I like about “the journey”……

journey

  • “To get through the hardest journey we need take only one step at a time, but we must keep on stepping”….Chinese Proverb
  • It’s your road, and yours alone.  Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.
  • Never compare your journey with others.  Your path is unique.  Own it and make the best of it.

(I was going to also going to add “Focus on the journey, not the destination.” but I think you should enjoy the journey AND love the destination!)

You cannot direct the wind, but you can adjust the sails!

Book Review: Elon Musk

elon

When my book club chose Elon Musk by Ashlee Vance as our monthly read I was less than thrilled about diving into it.  I do love non-fiction, pull yourself up by the bootstraps, kind of books, but I’m not a big car fan and I don’t really car about space travel, although the solar energy component I thought might be interesting.

WOW, was I pleasantly surprised.  It was written so well and in such a way that you wanted to know what was going to happen next, almost like a bit of mystery novel….will he make it or not??  Obviously there are Tesla’s on the road and Space X has launched rockets, but the journey to this end and the incredible man behind it, is what this book is about.  The tenacity with which he goes after his goals is admirable and inspiring.  Here are two of my highlights from the book…

  • “As (Larry) Page puts it, “Good ideas are always crazy until they’re not.”
  • “He feels that the suffering helped to make him who he is and gave him extra reserves of strength and will.  “They might have a little adversity at school, but these days schools re so protective,” he said.  “If you call someone a name, you get sent home.  When I was going to school, if they punched you and there was no blood, it was like, ‘Whatever. Shake it off.'”

I’m sure everyone thought the Wright Brothers, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford were crazy….until they weren’t!  Elon Musk is a force to be reckoned with and I loved reading about his journey to the success he’s had.  Yes, it was a bit of a “pull yourself up from the bootstraps” kind of book.  He came from humble beginnings, leveraged himself heavily financially, but he believed in what he was doing and persevered.

In a nutshell, I’d really recommend this book!

Up the Coast…Wine Tasting in Orcutt

IMAG4851

I love packing in a bunch of great activities in quick weekend trip.  My friend’s Dan & Jerry picked me up early last Saturday morning for a ride up the California coast to Santa Maria for our friends, Courtney, Mark and Brian’s, family wine tasting…and what a fun 24 hours it was!  I’d had a crazy week of unpacking and moving and I told Jerry that I would probably sleep the whole way up the coast, but, no, we talked the entire time. There’s nothing like a long car ride to catch up on each other’s lives and families…and the view of the water from Hwy 101 doesn’t hurt either!

nipomo bbq

We arrived in Santa Maria around 11:30, just in time to find somewhere to sample the famous Santa Maria tri-tip. We stopped at Rancho Nipomo BBQ for lunch and we were not disappointed.  The tri-tip sandwich was yummy, as were the fries, although we had mixed opinions on the BBQ sauce.

Our next stop was the main event for the weekend…..the open house and wine tasting of the Aether Wine Company in nearby Orcutt. As we arrived and checked in, we were given beautiful wine goblets with a custom made Aether logo, made by Courtney, affixed to each glass.  It was a gorgeous day among the vineyard at C2 Cellars, with the perfect breeze blowing, tasty bites to nibble on, soothing live music and the atmosphere was just so cool!  We sampled the 2013 bottles, one-Chardonnay and four-Pinot Noirs.  I had already purchased a couple of bottles of Chardonnay a few months back so knew what to expect.  It’s light and leans toward a European Chardonnay….perfect for a summer evening.  I mostly drink & prefer Chardonnay, but when I do drink red, it’s usually a Pinot, as it’s a little lighter in the red family…as opposed to a Cabernet or a Merlot.  The Pinots were quite different, and all yummy. The Santa Barbara County Pinot is a blend from three wineries, while the other three, Pence, Matrix and La Colline are single vineyard varietals.  I’m no wine expert, so I’m not going to try to explain the nuances of each Pinot, but I can tell you that I liked the La Colline the best.  If you’re a real oenophile and need a more in-depth explanation of each, just click on the links to check out each one…and buy a bottle or two.  We continued our wine journey in the cellar with some barrel tastings that were so different and some so complex that it really made you notice the distinct contrasts in the wines and understand how people get so entranced with the whole wine world.  It’s pretty interesting stuff!

We went back to our hotel for a much needed nap before dinner at Trattoria Uliveto in Orcutt.  We had already been tempted with the food of Chef Alonso Curti earlier in the day, as he had catered the wine tasting, so we knew it would be good.  There was quite a large group of us, so he suggested that we allow him to choose our meal and serve it family style.  Great idea and great food…from the salad to the lamb chop to the dessert, I can’t even remember how many courses we had.  The wine….some from Aether’s barrels that I can’t wait to buy next year….was flowing, the conversation and company stellar and just a great end to the day.

IMAG4870We woke up and got on the road early to check out the “best breakfast ever” (quote from Sharon) at Kay’s Orcutt Country Kitchen.  It was really good & I’d recommend it…the best ever we’d have to debate (although I’m not much of a breakfast aficionado, so don’t pay attention to me on this one.)  After breakfast we took a quick stroll in old downtown Orcutt and checked out a couple of cool vintage/antique stores (I got this past “motivational monday” wall hanging here) before starting the journey back down the 101 home.

I’ve made the accent colors in my bedroom orange & aqua and this just seemed too perfect not to purchase….and I get to see it every morning when I wake up.  I think my daughter and future son-in-law are thinking “enough with the inspirational sayings!”  They are everywhere…and I love them. (Apparently this is a little tweak on one from the movie Inception, which I never saw.)

Have a FABULOUS week!
